Dandy Brandywine

The first Brandywine tomatoes of the season are ripe! Other tomatoes may look nicer and produce more fruit.... but none have better flavor (in my humble opinion) than these favorite heirloom tomatoes.

Pictured here on my best vintage tea towel, these 3 Brandywine tomatoes will soon become Salsa! I find they have just the right sweetness to compliment the heat of jalepenos, the spiciness of garlic, and the tang of lime......and are very juicy, as well!

hi connie. I'll have to try the brandywine. I've never tried making my own salsa but I think it's a great idea. Love the hummingbird photos and the sunflower at sunset has such soothing colours. They make me think of a sleeping baby.
Cheers

Those do indeed look delicious. I'm not able to resist just eating them, so they never make it to the salsa stage at my house.

I'm still waiting for my first Brandywine!

Brandywines were the first heirloom tomatoes I tried - and remain a favorite. This year I ended up planting two other kinds - expanding my options! When I share with neighbors and friends, I always hope they don't take one look at the top and toss them. Give me taste over perfect tops anytime!

p.s. I have some tea towels very similar to yours - from my grandmother. I use them often and the colors stay just as bright as when I got them.

Sounds delicious, Connie. Nothing better than summer salsa made with fresh tomatoes. Do hope you post your recipe.

Yep, Brandywine is the favorite at our house, followed by Black Krim.

I wouldn't have the patience to make salsa with those beauties. I tend to eat brandywines fresh within the hour they were picked!

a beautiful presentation...yum - we've been eating BLT's or rather BT's.

Oh I could have a good BT like Me said.. Those look delish.. Are they soft and sweet or firm and tangy...??

Dirty Fingernails - I would have to say they are more soft and sweet....that's why I like them for salsa, and use my firmer tomatoes for slicers.

I haven't tried growing brandywine before so that is something to do for next year. This year I'm growing, among other things, the heirloom tomato Cherokee and I like it a lot.

Last year I tried Brandywine. Unfortunately it was a bad year for tomatoes and I didn't get a single fruit off of those plants. I barely got any off of other plants.

I'm having a much better year for tomatoes this time around, but didn't bother with BW . Maybe I'll try it again next year.

The tomatoes look great on the vintage linen. I have some with a similar look that you've just inspired me to bring out and use!

I grew some brandywine last year but they were rather bland and tasteless. I bought some the previous year from the farmers market and they tasted wonderful. I don't know why the difference. Since I have to fight the rabbits, ground hog and deer for the tomatoes, I've just decided to buy the good tasting ones from the farmers market.
