Frosted Flowers

Another gardening year is drawing to a close, with the arrival of a very early frost on September 30th. I ventured out into the frosty morn to grab a few photos of the icy beauty displayed on some of the flowers.

A pair of chilly yellow Cosmos.

A pot of Cherry & Ivory Swizzle Zinnias, started from seed. These were new for me this year, and I so enjoyed them! The frost just added another dimension to the happy red and white flowers.

Black-eyed Susan, with icy center cone.

Laura Bush Petunia, edged in frosty white. These have become a favorite of mine the past few years. They are prolific and hardy, a non-hybrid type with smaller flowers and a nice fragrance. I save the seeds each year.

Pink Cactus flowered Zinnia.

A yellow Calendula...hanging it's head in the cold.

I admire the quote from Sir Francis Bacon you use, beautiful and truthful sentiment. Have you ever read his work "On Friendship"?

You got out at just the right time to get those beautiful photos! I can't pick a favorite! Still, it would have been better if the date was later. We had an early snow and cold snap. I am sad.

Your flowers look like they have been dusted with sugar!

Those photos are just beautiful. So glad you managed to get the pictures before things warmed up. You only get that one brief opportunity and then they are gone.

Your photography is really terrific, Connie! I just love that red & white zinnia...I must remember that for the spring! Your purple petunia is very sweet looking. I like it's smallness! And the shade is pretty darn nice, as well! Wow, you guys had frost already--and we are just now starting to feel the chill in the air that is fall. I've been forced to accept it by our recent temps in the 50's. It will get warmer later in the week...but not for long! I hope you have a few nice days before the cold winter sets in!

Wow, that's some collection of frosty flowers. I admire your going outside in such cold weather for them! Goodbye, zinnias, etc. Lovely swansong. And congrats on the gorgeous pepppers below! Seattle is way too cool in the summer for peppers.

Stunning photos.
Never would have known the first flowers are cosmos. Oh so pretty.
Don't remember frost on flowers here...think the flowers were dead by then. No frost yet.

It's getting cold out there but I still see tons of beauty...like these blooms with frost! Nice, Connie!

What breath taking photos. I especially liked the cosmos. Thank you for sharing the beauty.

Those are some great photos to capture that first frost. This year we seemed to skip the light nip and went right to a hard frost. The flowers were suspended under frost when I left to work and quite dead when I came home...the end of a season.

Lovely photos! It is snowing here today and I wish I'd found your blog a bit sooner - great inspiration to shoot the last of my bloomers, frosted with snow. :)
