This lovely green grasshopper caught my eye in the garden this week, as it poised on a pink Hollyhock.

The Grasshopper
by Conrad Aiken
Grasshopper
grasshopper
all day long
we hear your scraping
summer song
like
rusty
fiddles
in
the
grass
as through
the meadow
path
we pass
such funny legs
such funny feet
and how we wonder
what you eat
maybe a single blink of dew
sipped from a clover leaf would do
then high in air
once more you spring
to fall in grass again
and sing.

There's not near as many grasshoppers here as when I were a child...I live just 2 minutes from where I grew up and have a large field...and very seldom see large grasshoppers.
Strange looking creatures, aren't they? Those long thin legs and pointy head. Haven't seen many yet this year. Usually this is about the time they I see them along the roads.

Nice pic. Nice poem, too.
Hi Connie~~ S/he has a refreshing suit of green. The ones I see here are always brown. Although they're wont to eat our precious plantings, I don't have the heart to destroy them. Nice poem!
Nice picture.
Great picture, Connie; and the poem is so fitting! Thank you.
Very cool!
Great pic even tho I'm not a fan of grasshoppers! Right now I have lots of holes in many plants because of them (although they aren't as bad as some years). Yours looks different than the ones we have??
Connie that is a great picture girl ! I haven't seen any around my garden (phew) it is just one of those wet cool years they don't enjoy here ? LOL
Love the poem and picture together!
It's a great photo, and a perfect poem to go with it;-) I just saw my first and only recently but didn't have my camera!
You take the best pictures Connie. You really captured it.
Great photo. The poem is perfect. I'm thinking that perhaps it might be a katydid? I'll look it up to make sure. They are bright green like that... (just a technicality, really.) ;-)
That's an awesome photo, Connie! I was at my daughter's house one night last week and we heard what we thought was a tree frog. Once we located it, it wasn't a tree frog at all! It was a grasshopper singing very loudly!
You have posted wonderful picture of flowers that is appreciated. Very very nicely shot.
Lovely photo Connie - and I love Hollyhocks too - I have them in our garden here and you can't ever have enough... much like poppies really! Hope all's going well with you and your garden - bon weekend! Miranda
grasshoppers make me laugh! their eyes make them look very intense. haven't seen many this year.

Nice photo! I've been seeing more grasshoppers, but none as green as this guy.
