Postcards from Idaho

In honor of the upcoming New Year, I thought I would send a couple of 'virtual postcards' from our beautiful state! The photos below were taken on Harris Ridge, about 20 minutes from our home, where my husband and I spent an afternoon Elk hunting this week. The land is owned by a cattle rancher friend of ours and it is a beautiful place....seemingly on top of the world!

There were 30+ plus Elk in this herd, including cows, calves, spikes and one big bull. (The two small dark spots on the left are 2 deer....who were watching with interest.) We hiked about half a mile in nearly a foot of fresh snow, and the scenery was spectacular....providing some great photo opportunities. The hunt was successful and we are grateful to God for the provision of meat to fill the freezer for yet another year. Just as our vegetable garden makes an important contribution to our diet in the summer, this wonderful low-fat grass-fed meat rounds out our healthy diet all through the year!

This tiny log cabin sat just off the road, not far from where we parked our vehicle. I tried to imagine myself living here, in years gone by. I venture to say there are no modern conveniences in this humble abode. ;-)

Wishing you all a Happy New Year..... and your very best garden in 2008!

CONNIE!! Wow, wow, wow. Those are two of the most beautiful photos I've ever seen. If my husband gets a look at those, I think he'll want to move. Just breathtaking!!

Happy New Year to you and your family!

Oooooooh! I do wish we would get some snow this year, it's been so long. Your pictures are wonderful! But I must admit, I'm a little jealous of your snow.

The picture of the cabin looks like a professional painting. I can't believe it is a photo. Such a gorgeous place to be. I'm glad you have meat for the freezer. I would not want you to get snowed in with no supplies!

Ah, the pause that refreshes is always located on your blog! Thanks, Connie, for the pics of places we can go only because you send us there. Thanks, also, for one last picture. May God bless you richly this year. C.

Now this are great postcards Connie. I didn't know that Idaho could be so breath takingly beautiful.

So you're pretty much self sufficient with the veggies and fruit from the garden and the elk meat from the hunt? Good for you!

A very happy and healthy 2008 with loads of gardening and blogging fun!

Hope you had a great Christmas and an even better New Year.

The first pic is great for a second there I though it was a pic of Santa and his reindeer.

Beautiful photos of a beautiful place! I admire you for hunting with your husband. I can't get myself worked up to do that... but we do eat the venison he brings home. :-)

I feel that we can look forward to the year 2008 as one full of promise and possibilities! Best wishes.

Hi Connie - these photos are stunning! You really do live in a beautiful place. How do you elk hunt - trucks, horses, snowmobiles??

I liked the snow on the Graham Thomas rose on an earlier post too.

Happy New Year!!

kris said...

Oh - just re-read your post - you hunt on foot!!! How deep is your snow now?

Connie said...

Kris - The place we hunt is on a ridge at a higher elevation, hence the deeper snow levels. We live at river level so most of our snow has melted away now... we only see a little on top of the mountains. Our weather in the valley is more moderate than the surrounding areas, at least a zone difference.
The rancher loaded the elk whole into the truck with his tractor!

Connie, these are lovely photos. Thank you so much for sharing these snowcapped mountains with those of use who don't get to see snow very often.

Hello Connie;

I am enjoying your blog as it allows an opportunity to see why some from Vermont are moving there. I think Vermont is "the best" but I can see the similarities.

You have great herds of elk but here they can only be found where they are farmed. We have about 5000 moose and although they do not eat our gardens, they do have big feet and they plow through deer fences as if they didn't exist.

We're moving our business to a new site and I have had to replace three sections of fence because the moose walk right through and just keep going. I expect elk have a similar habit.

New Year wishes!

Hi connie,
I love the pic of the tiny log cabin.

When we travel I am always on the lookout for old homes like this to photograph.

You got a great shot of it with the freshly fallen snow.
