This poppy seems to really glow, as it basks in the early morning sun. I don't know for sure which kind it is, as it was in a mixture of seeds, but it is just so charming!

gardenpath - Yes, I do grown them from seed. Usually I winter sow them, then transplant to the garden while the seedlingz are small.

I'm with gina-- I can't even get California poppies to grow! I do want to try peony poppies and shirley poppies next year. What a lovely flower! Have a special weekend with your dear ones (especially your smallest dear one, our common relation!)

ReplyDeleteSo when you grow them all together in mixes like this, is it possible to take seed from just this one and get similar-looking ones? Or would you get mixed poppies from this one, too?
blackswamp girl - I planted a mix of peony-flowered poppies received from a Gardenweb trade, but this one doesn't look like that type to me. I did have some'lavender' poppies planted in that spot last year, so maybe it came from seed dropped last year that grew along with my transplanted ones. I think poppies stay true to family type, perhaps with some color variation because of pollination by bees. That said, when you trade seeds you can sometimes get some surprises.:-)

ReplyDeleteI love these poppies - I had some just self seed in our garden last year and they came up again this year too which is lovely - no idea where they drifted in from! That's the joy of nature! Miranda
